A great start
"I'm responsible for the Non Tobacco Wholesale Channel. I've customers in London, Swansea, Leicester, Manchester and Kendal who I visit on a regular basis. I'm also a visitor to our Head Office in Bristol; so all in all I feel it is fair to say I travel all around the UK.
I joined the company because I was aware of the excellent training and support given to new employees and the overall excellent reputation of the company and its brands. I started as a Trainee Sales Rep working in the Liverpool area, after 6 months induction and training I was signed off as Sales Development Executive for Liverpool City Centre and surrounding areas. I was part of an extremely strong sales team with a very experienced manager and I learnt a great deal about selling and resilience from the team."
Time to develop
"During my time in the Salesforce I undertook a nine month secondment to our Bristol office working in the Multiple Account Trading Team, this was a great opportunity. After nine months I applied for a role as a Multiple Account Executive and was successful. It wasn't long before I moved to the Marketing department to my current role of Business Development Manager for Papers and Accessories.
It goes to show that Imperial Tobacco is a great place to build a career if you have the willingness to learn, and a proactive and hard working approach.
Putting that extra hour in can make all the difference – and so can taking the time to learn. It's best to get the most from the excellent induction training you are given and ask as many questions as possible."
Words of advice
"My advice to a new joiner? Look to engage with other areas of the business and spend time with as many departments as possible to find out how it all works. Make it your business to find out about secondments and training courses and how you can get on to them. Talk to your line manager about getting extra work or projects and think about how you can put yourself on the map. Don't be afraid to talk to people, no matter how senior they are. You'll find everyone's willing to talk.
We're an international company and there are opportunities to have a career right across the world if that's what you want. We're successful not just because we're profitable, but also because we invest in people. Yes, our brands are excellent, but we achieve by nurturing the right people to deliver our goals and objectives."
